This past week the Flin Flon Bombers began the regular season this on Friday with a trip to Nipawin to take on the Hawks at Centennial Arena. Following a scoreless first period, the Bombers were down 2-1 nearing the end of the second period with the only goal coming from Trevor Stenglein. Rallying back, the Bombers scored three unanswered goals, coming from Trevor Stenglein, Joey Lies and Aidan Chow within 56 seconds of each other to end of the period. The Bombers sealed the deal in the third period with an insurance goal coming from Matt Egan, securing the 5-3 victory.
It was the Bombers power play that struggled the most throughout the night going 0/6.
The Bombers out shot the Hawks 49 to 20 and Harmon Laser-Hume stopped 17/20 shots.
On Saturday, the Bombers took on the Melfort Mustangs in a physical game for their home opener at the Whitney Forum playing in front of a crowd of 922 people. After a strong defensive showing by both teams in the first period, the Bombers were able to break the ice mid-way through the second with a goal from Trevor Stenglein (3) assisted by Koen Senft (1) and Luke Lepper (2). The Bombers had a 1-0 lead going into the third but the Mustangs tied it up with a goal in the first 30 seconds of the period. Tied up 1-1 at the end of regulation, the game called for overtime, where Melfort scored shortly after the first face off, taking the victory 2-1.
The Bombers were very successful on the penalty kill, stopping the Mustangs all seven times but struggled again on the power play going 0/6. Harmon Laser Hume stopped 37/39 shots and the Bombers got out shot 39 to 36.
The Bombers walked away with 3 points this week putting them in 2nd place in the Sherwood Division and tied with Weyburn and Yorkton for 2nd overall in the SJHL.
