Week In Review

By Adam Ricard- Flin Flon Bombers

It was a good week for the Maroon and White, after coming off a pair of losses to the defending SJHL champion Nipawin Hawks, the Bombers were able to rally off 3 wins against the Melville Millionaires. The first game being in Warman for the SJHL annual showcase event, ending at home with a pair of wins over the weekend.

The second of two showcase games seen the Bombers drop a close game to the Yorkton Terriers. The Bombers were coming off their first 4 games in 5 nights, and were unable to muster enough offence to even the score in the third. It was a back and forth affair in Warman, but the Bombers showed well despite the schedule disadvantages.

After some well-deserved rest, the Bombers hosted the Millionaires for a pair of games, and unleashed their powerful offence at will Friday night in front of the faithful fans at the Whitney Forum.

Caleb Moretz (Fairbanks, AK) led the way in scoring, getting his first career SJHL hatrick. Brandson Hein (Winnipeg, MB), 2 goals  2 assists,  Daylan Marchi (Lethbridge, AB), 2 goals 1 assist, Vincent Nardone ( Rosemere, PQ),  1 goal, and Jesse Young (Coquitlam, BC), 1 goal, all scored for the home team.

Pierce Diamond (Edmonton, AB), was sensational, stopping 33 of the 34 shots fired his way.

Saturdays contest would prove to be a much different affair, with the final score being 4-3 for Flin Flon. Melville fired 44 shots in total, and Diamond kicked away 41 in likely his best game thus far as a Bomber.

Marchi, Moretz, Nardone, and Hein all hit the score sheet for the Bombers. Melville goalie Berk Berkeliev (Calgary, AB), had a sensational game, turning away 32 of the 36 shots faced.

Next up for the Bombers is a pair of home games, as the much improved Kindersley Klippers roll into town. Both Friday and Saturday nights games go at 7:30 local time. They will then hit the road for their second 4 games in 5 nights, traveling to Humboldt, Notre Dame, Weyburn, and finishing off in Estevan.

The Bombers have 5 players in the top 20 in league scoring through 8 games, and hold the top two spots overall. They are two points back on Nipawin for Division the division lead, and are 4th overall in league standings. Nipawin has played only 6 games to date, but have two road games this week, facing Kindersley and Battlefords.

Flin Flon has the best goal differential, and has scored the most goals, however, they are 5th in the league in goals against. Nipawin has only allowed 8 goals, Humboldt has only allowed 13, while Weyburn has only allowed 15.

It will be an important first half of hockey for the Flin Flon Bombers, so let’s get to the rink and get loud!

Brandson Hein, 8GP-9G-8A-17pts, continues to play well, and leads the league in scoring.

Caleb Moretz, 8GP-9G-5A-14pts, is also having a tremendous season, and is 2nd in league scoring.

Daylan Marchi- 8GP-7G-6A-13pts, sits 6th in league scoring.
