Two wins was all that was needed last season. Two wins in the Canatla Cup finals was all that was in front of the Flin Flon Bombers winning their first SJHL championship in 20+ years.
Now the team that was on the cusp 11 months ago will start that journey again when they take to home ice tonight to take on the Notre Dame Hounds in Game 1 of their SJHL Quarter Final matchup.
The Sherwood Division champs are over a week removed from game action but the time off has rested bodies and has helped prepare the team for their next step in a great season so far.
“We took the week to get healthy and prepare for the Hounds,” said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Reagan. “That group is focused and we’ll be prepared for Friday night.” (Game 1 – Game Time: 7:30 PM – Radio: 102.9 CFAR).
17 total players were here from last year when theMustangs hoisted their second consecutive Canalta Cup on the Whitney Forum ice including two former Mustangs in Eric Sinclair (Kenora, ON) and Teal Sobkowicz (Outlook, SK) who were brought in by Reagan to add playoff depth to an already impressively deep roster.
Although the team lost their top three goal scorers from last year, some feel that this year’s edition of the team is deeper.
“We made up that scoring, Reiter (Greyson Reitmeier, Naksup, BC), Lavs (Jason Lavallee, Thetdford Mines, QC) and Zimm (Rylee Zimmer, Russell, MB) picked up the scoring slack, but we got that secondary scoring that at times we may have lacked last year,” added Reagan.
Tonight the seventh ranked Notre Dame Hounds come to town with an impressive scoring punch up front themselves.
The team boasted the league’s leading goal scorer in Ben Duperreault, who tied with FLin Flon’s Reitmeier, and Adam Dawe who combined for 143 points in the regular season.
The team’s split their games this year with both teams winning on home ice. Flin Flon won 6-4 and 4-0 at the Forum while dropping a 4-0 and 3-2 decision in Wilcox, SK.
The two teams will play Game 2 tomorrow night before making the trek south for Games 3 and 4 March 21 and 22.
