Kocur Commits To AIC

By Flin Flon Bombers, 07/07/16, 12:45PM CDT

For the second straight day, a member of the Bombers announces his committment to a college hockey program.

The Flin Flon Bombers are proud to announce that 1995 born Joel Kocur (Edson, AB) has committed to the American International College (Springfield, MA) Yellow Jackets NCAA Division I men’s hockey program for the 2016-17 season.

Kocur played parts of two seasons with the Bombers after being acquired from the Whitecourt Wolverines of the AJHL.  Two seasons ago Kocur had 29 points (9g, 20a) in 37 games with the Bombers to go along with 17 points (8g, 9a) in 22 games with the Wolverines.

Last season Kocur was a member of the potent trio along with Alex Smith and Brandon Switzer, where the 6’1, 180 pounder had 71 points (34g, 37a) in 57 games and added another 18 points (6g, 12a) in 16 playoff games helping the team to their first SJHL Final in 23 years.

“We are really excited for Joel to be going to a rejuvenated program at AIC,” commented Head Coach and General Manager Mike Reagan.  “With coach (Eric) Lange’s new vision of the program we think he will be a big part of helping in the process.”

Playing in the Atlantic Hockey conference, the Yellow Jackets were 7-29-3 last season under Head Coach Gary Wright who headed the program for their entire 32 years in the NCAA.  With Wright’s retirement this off season, the announcing of new Head Coach Eric Lange, and the announcement of a program overhaul including a bigger recruitment budget and added scholarships, the program is looking to turn things around, adding Kocur is a step in that direction.

“Coach Lange is very enthusiastic about changing the culture at AIC and we believe that Joel is going to a coach that will get the most out of him and continue in his development,” added Reagan.  “Joel is a perfect college player with his ability to skate and make plays happen.”
