Having won two straight going into Friday against Yorkton (9-20-1-1) and Melville (9-21-0-1) on Saturday, the Bombers were looking to gain some ground in the tight Sherwood Division and SJHL playoff race overall.
On Friday night the Bombers (15-12-0-4) had to rely on their goaltending as starting goalie Brenden Newton (Medicine Hat, AB) was only beaten once, midway through the first period, and made 36 saves as the Bombers won in overtime, 2-1. He improved his record to 4-4 and has a 2.90 goals against average with a 0.916 save percentage.
Kalium Gervais beat Newton at the 8:08 mark of the opening period, which stood as the only goal until late in the second when Joseph Leonidas (Calgary, AB) ripped a shot from the top of the circle on the power play to tie it up 1-1.
Captain Tyson Empey (Swift Current, SK), making his return to the lineup after a month off with a shoulder injury, picked up an assist along with Rylee Zimmer.
After a scoreless third, that saw the visiting Terriers fire 15 shots on Newton, and finished outshooting the Bombers 37-32 overall, Brandon Switzer (Brandon, MB) found the net midway through the overtime period from Alex Smith (Edmonton, AB) and Curtis Roach (Saskatoon, SK).
It was a different game for the home side on Saturday night when the Bombers opened up with five goals in the first, one more in the second and third, cruising to a 7-0 win against the Millionaires, their first win against Melville this season after two other attempts.
Switzer opened the scoring 6:13 into the first from Smith and Joel Kocur (Edson, AB) and would be followed by Brandon Masson (Oak Lake, MB), Nick Shumlanski and Kocur with a pair, to take a 5-0 lead into the second.
For Masson, it was his first of the season in this first game back from an injury that had him out of the lineup since October 5th.
Overall the line of Smith, Swizter and Kocur finished with four points each with Kocur scoring his third of the game in the second period. Smith has points in eight straight games (3g, 16a), Switzer in 12 straight (10g, 11a) and Kocur has points in 11 of his last 13 games (11g, 11a).
Zac Robidoux (Winnipeg, MB) would return to the net after his return from the Team West camp last week, and made 35 saves for this second consecutive shutout. Overall Robidoux is 11-7-0-3 with a 2.58 goals against average (4th in SJHL) and a save percentage of 0.925 (4th in the SJHL) and 2 shutouts.
Krisitian St. Onge (Saskatoon, SK) rounded out the scoring shorthanded in the third with his sixth of the season from Empey.
