For the second time this season a member of the Flin Flon Bombers has received one of the SJHL’s weekly awards.
1995 born Alex Smith (Edmonton, AB) has been named the Canalta Hotels SJHL Player of the Week.
Smith had a big game on Friday night in Estevan were he scored four goals helping the Bombers to a 5-1 win against the home town Bruins. The next night in Weyburn, he scored the lone goal in a 3-1 loss to the Red Wings, helping the Bombers spilt the tough four games in five night road trip.
On the season Smith has 16 points (8g, 8a) in 17 games, good for a tie with Brandon Switzer (Brandon, MB) for the team lead.
As for the weekend games, Head Coach and General Manager Mike Reagan was happy with the outcome.
“We’ve never went 4-0 in this southern swing,” said Reagan. “For us to go 2-2, especially with the way these teams are built, but if you said that we would be going into the fourth game with the chance to go 3-1, I’m very happy with the results.”
The team had won in a shootout against the Humboldt Broncos to open the trip last Tuesday night, and aside from the blip against the Notre Dame Hounds on Wednesday, the coach was happy with the team’s effort.
“It was a big win against Estevan and we felt we should have one against Weyburn, but for the third time this season we were unable to beat Burgart (Wings starter Jake Burgart). He’s been the difference in all three games against us this season.”
The team will now shift their focus to the Melfort Mustangs tomorrow night to begin a home and home series. The Mustangs are first in t he Sherwood Division, one point behind the Battlefords North Stars for first in the SJHL.
