Bombers Week In Review

By Flin Flon Bombers, 02/16/15, 1:30PM CST

A crucial home and home series with the Nipawin Hawks takes centre stage in the week that was for the Flin Flon Bombers.

Flin Flon has six games left in the regular season and finds themselves in a battle for the fourth spot in the playoffs.  This past week they had two home and one away in the week that was.

Fourth, Fifth or Sixth:  It’s going to come down to the wire when it comes to the playoff picture.  The Bombers are battling it out with Nipawin and Notre Dame for fourth and fifth spots, which also include home ice advantage.    Right now Notre Dame sits fourth, three points up on both Nipawin and Flin Flon with the Bombers and Hounds each holding a game in hand on the Hawks.  The Bombers and Hawks don’t see the Hounds again this season but face each other once more, at the Whitney Forum on the last day of the regular season.

The Rest of the SJHL:  The Hounds are hot; they’ve won seven of their last 10 and have points in seven straight games.  Melfort and Kindersley are only separated by two points in the race for first overall with the Millionaires holding down the third spot as the Viterra Division leaders but would sit seventh overall in points.  The Stars have a mathematical chance of catching Flin Flon and Nipawin but would need serious help as they are 11 points back with only six games remaining.

Injuries/Suspensions:  The Bombers welcomed back all their suspended players against the Hawks on Saturday night.  Tyler Bell (Regina, SK) and Alex Smith (Edmonton, AB) were out for two games due to the line brawl against Melville with Brandon Masson serving a 1 game suspension.  Braden Lacoursiere was also serving a 2 game suspension for a hit that occurred in the game against Melville.  Goalie Adam Beukeboom (Upper Body) and forward Kristian St. Onge (Upper Body) are still out from injuries and are listed as day to day.  Beukeboom skated this past week and will skate more this week coming up.

02/11/15 – 1-2 @ La Ronge Ice Wolves:  The Bombers fired 45 shots on the Ice Wolves starter Kris Joyce, but was only able to beat him once, a Parker Evans-Campbell (High River, AB) power play goal in the third, as the Bombers suffered a 2-1 loss.  Curtis Roach (Saskatoon, SK) and Joel Kocur (Edson, AB) assisted on the goal.  Simon Hofley (Ottawa, ON) made 32 saves in the losing performance.

02/13/15 – 3-1 vs Nipawin Hawks:  The Bomber and Hawks had a home and home series start on Friday night at the Whitney Forum and saw all four goals scored in the first period as the home side took a 3-1 victory.  Chris Rauckman (Red Deer, AB) scored his league leading 36th of the season from Brett Boehm (Martensville, SK) and Danys Chartrand (Winnipeg, MB) and Evans-Campbell and Austin Evans (Whistler, BC) all scored for Flin Flon.  Austin Calladine (Saskatoon, SK) picked up a pair of assists with Evans-Campbell and Tyson Empey (Swift Current, SK) picking up the other helpers.  Hofley was solid in between the pipes, making 37 saves for his 18th win of the season.

02/14/15 – 2-5 @ Nipawin Hawks:  After getting outshot, but sneaking away with a win the night before, the Bombers did the outshooting with a loss the second night of the home and home series, dropping one to Nipawin 5-2.  The Hawks scored two in the first, one in the second and another in the third to come away with a win.  Robbie Cameron (Saskatoon, SK) and Bell each scored for the Bombers with Brandon Switzer (Brandon, MB), Brandon Masson (Oak Lake, MB) Boehm and Rauckman all picking up assists.
