The Flin Flon Bombers finished up their four game in five night road trip on Saturday, finally putting a blemish on the record of the Notre Dame Hounds.
Parker Evans-Campbell (High River, AB) scored 2:16 into overtime on a feed from Erik Pedersen (Airdrie, AB) to push the Bombers (6-2-2-2) to a 2-1 win against the undefeated Hounds (8-0-1-0), and finish up with a 2-1-0-1 overall record on the trip.
It was the goaltenders that took centre stage in the battle of two of the SJHL’s top teams. Notre Dame’s Alexi Thibaudeau made 28 saves as Flin Flon’s Simon Hofley (Ottawa, ON) redirecting 32 of 22 Hounds shots.
Hofley, who had the night off Friday against the Weyburn Red Wings, faced 14 shots in the third period alone, and improved his record to 6-4-1-0-1 on the season.
After a scoreless first period, the teams exchanged goals in the second when Alex Smith (Edmonton, AB) scored just before the halfway point of the period to take a 1-0 lead. Austin Evans (Whistler, BC) and Danys Chartrand picked up the assists on Smith’s fifth of the season.
Smith finished the four game road trip with four goals and three assists.
Sam Aulie would tie up the score later in the period with his first of the season. Aulie, had struggled offensively up till this point of the season had 26 goals last year for the Hounds.
Flin Flon’s action is not until Friday night when they entertain the Weyburn Red Wings.
ICE CHIPS: Flin Flon was 0 for 5 on the power play while the Hounds went 0 for 4. --- The win moves the team into a tie for first in the Sherwood Division with the Melfort Mustangs. These two teams will meet up next Wednesday when the Bombers visit Melfort. --- After Friday, the Bombers will be on the road again for a three game swing starting in Yorkton, following it up with Melfort and then La Ronge.
