The Flin Flon Bombers came out of their annual Spring Camp from Saskatoon with a look into the future of the organization. Despite the team not eyeing a pure “Superstar”, the team and Head Coach and General Manager Mike Reagan did see the most depth in the camp since he took over six seasons ago.
The team left Saskatoon with 8 recruits signed for the 2013-14 SJHL season, one of them being Flin Flon native 1995 born Evan Akkerman.
“Evan’s obviously been on our radar for a few years now being a local player,” commented Reagan, “he’s a big body that needs to play physical; we look to him as a Brody Robison type player.”
Evan finished his third year with the Norman Northstars of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League this past season were the 6’0, 170 pounder finished the 2012-13 season at a point per game (12g, 31a, 43 pts, 70 PIM) and earned himself an East Division All-Star nod.
Overall he completed his three years with 79 points (26g, 53a) and 132 penalty minutes in 122 games.
Akkerman had serious looks from the Waywayseecappo Wolverines last season when the Manitoba Junior Hockey League club wanted to sign the prospect to play there for the 2012-13 season. But Akkerman chose to go back to Midget for this final year and report to Bomber camp this season, a decision that has paid off.
“Growing up playing my entire minor hockey in Flin Flon, it’s always been a dream of mine to play for my hometown team,” said Akkerman, “Now that the opportunity is actually here, it’s a wonderful feeling, almost surreal.”
Akkerman and the rest of the recruits will attend Flin Flon Bomber main camp starting on August 30th, at the Whitney Forum.
