The Flin Flon Bombers’ winner of their defensive player of the year showed the other side of his game last night as Brock Hounsell scored with 1:50 left in overtime to push the Bombers over the visiting Melfort Mustangs 4-3 on the final day of the 2012-13 regular season.
Brett Penner opened the scoring with his 15th of the season in the first period to take a 1-0 lead into the middle frame. Landon Hiebert picked up the lone assist on the goal.
Jason Wark and Brett Boehm scored the other two goals for the Bombers, who sat out seven regulars and had three midget aged players in the lineup. Local products Brendan Barron and Boyd Langan and Martensville, SK’s Carson Boehm, brother of Bomber Brett, all saw action in a call up role.
The Bombers now have just over a week off before they start up the North Division semi final against the Nipawin Hawks, in Nipawin on Friday March 8th. Check back to bombers.ca for a series preview.
ICE CHIPS: Flin Flon went 0 for 2 on the power play last night. They didn’t play shorthanded once last night. --- Brett Boehm picked up three points last night putting him in a tie for second in team scoring with Josh Roach. Riley Storzuk picks up the Geroge Leel Memorial Fund for most points on the season (18g, 39a, 57pts) while Boehm takes home the Pat Spiller Memorial trophy for the teams leading goal scorer (25g). --- In other action last night the Kindersley Klippers upset the Humboldt Broncos 2-0 while the Estevan Bruins edged the Notre Dame Hounds 4-3 in overtime.
