Alex Smith (Edmonton, AB) and Danys Chartrand (Winnipeg, MB) had excellent junior careers with the Flin Flon Bombers and those resulted in moving on to scholarships to high end hockey NCAA Division I programs. Both of those programs had impressive Conference playoff runs and have moved on to the NCAA Tournament.
Smith finished up last season with a career season, his last in junior A, which was capped off with an appearance in the Canalta Cup finals. Now this season with the Michigan Tech Huskies, his team won a thrilling double overtime game in the finals in the WCHA final over Bowling Green.
His team will take on the top ranked Dever Pioneers in the Midwest Regional.
For Chartand, currently in his second season with the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks after three seasons with the Bombers, he made the finals of the NCHC tournament after upending top ranked Denver in the semifinals.
They eventually lost to the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, but move on and face off against Boston University in the West Regional.
All regional playoffs go this weekend before the eventual winners move on to the Frozen Four which takes place at the United Center in Chicago, IL April 6 – 8.
