The Flin Flon Bombers opened up their 2016-17 season with a pair of wins in a home and home series against the Nipawin Hawks last Friday and Saturday night.
Friday the Bombers and Hawks went to overtime to settle on the winner with new comer Dondre Watson (Calgary, AB) picking up the loose up and putting home his first as a Bomber just :49 seconds into the extra frame.
The Bomber lead by 1-0 and 2-1 before the Hawks scored two in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Keegan Matthew (Aurora, ON) would tie up the score with less than two minutes left in the third off a redirect and send the game to OT.
Brandon Lesko (Hafford, SK) and Nick Shumlanski (Tisdale, SK) scored the other Bomber goals.
Saturday Brendan Newton (Medicine Hat, SK) made 16 saves for this first shutout of the season and Joseph Leonidas (Calgary, AB) and Kristian St. Onge (Saskatoon, SK) each scored to help the Bombers to a 2-0 win in Nipawin.
Flin Flon outshot the Hawks by a total of 73-43 over the two games.
Flin Flon will going into another home and home series this weekend when they clash with the La Ronge Ice Wolves. La Ronge will be in town on Friday night (Game Time: 7:30 PM) with the return game going on Saturday (Game Time: 8:30 PM – Radio 102.9 CFAR).
The Wolves come into the weekend 0-2 after back to back losses against the Melfort Mustangs Friday and Saturday night.
The Bombers won’t return to Flin Flon until late next week, the team will travel to Warman, SK on Monday and Tuesday to play in the annual SJHL Showcase where they will play Weyburn (Monday – Game Time: 6:30 PM) and Yorkton (Tuesday – Game Time: 12:30 PM).
