Brenden Newton makes 32 saves and Brandon Switzer scores two goals helping the Bombers to a 3-1 win, and a 4-1 series win.

The Flin Flon Bombers needed a quick start to take momentum on Saturday night as they were looking to finish off their SJHL Quarter Final series against the Weyburn Red Wings and rookie forward Nick Shumlanski (Tisdale, SK) would do just that.

Starting on a line with Adam Wilson and Kristian St. Onge, the former Beardy’s Blackhawk would pounce on a rebound off a two on one and fire a shot over the glove of the Red Wings Jack Burgart giving the Bombers a lead just 15 seconds into the game, a lead they wouldn’t give up as they finished off the series with a 3-1 win, taking it 4-1.

“We needed that quick start,” said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Reagan.  “With the lineup we had on the ice we needed momentum and confidence to put this series away.”

The Bombers were without five regulars in the lineup in the series clinching game.  The team was without defensemen Pierre Luc Morin (Ste-Hélène-de-Kamourask, QC) due to injury, Brandon Masson (Oak Lake, MB), Joseph Leonidas (Calgary, AB) and forwards Brandon Lesko (Hafford, SK) and Jason Lavallee (Thetford-Mines, QC) all out due to suspensions.

“We are extremely happy with the guys that got into the lineup today,” added the coach.  “Some of these guys haven’t played that much this season and there was a lot of pressure on them to be in this game, they answered that call.”

Brandon Switzer (Brandon, MB) would round out the scoring for the Bombers with a pair.  He would score a power play goal in the second from Alex Smith (Edmonton, AB) and add a late one in the third from Joel Kocur (Edson, AB) for his third and fourth of the series.

Goalie Brenden Newton (Medicine Hat, AB) was solid in his fourth start.  He allowed one goal, midway through the third on the power play, making 32 saves.  Since coming in midway through game one, he has a 4-0 record with a goals against average of  1.32 and a save percentage of 0.964.

Flin Flon will now shift their focus to the Battlefords North Stars in the SJHL Semi Finals.  That series will start on Friday.
