The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League has named the finalist for the annual league awards and 1995 born Alex Smith (Edmonton, AB) has been named the Sherwood Division’s winner of the RBC Player of the Year.
It has been a career year for Smith. In his second full season with the Bombers, Smith currently sits third overall in the SJHL scoring race with 83 points (31g, 52a) in 55 games to go along with 150 penalty minutes. He was named the SJHL Canalta Hotels SJHL Player of the Week three times and the RBC SJHL Player of the Month once.
The Edmonton native also recently accepted a scholarship to Michigan Tech after multiple offers from other NCAA Division I schools.
Smith is up against the Finning Division’s Austin Calladine and the Viterra Division’s Darcy DeRoose.
Along with Smith, two other Bombers received league honors with 1997 born Brenden Newton (Medicine Hat, AB) and 1998 born Cory Thomas (St. Brieux, SK) were both named to the SJHL All Rookie Team.
Newton, who was named the SJHL Rookie of the Month in January, has appeared in 21 games this season registering a 13-5-0-1 record with a goals against average of 2.49 and a save percentage of 0.922 to go along with two shutouts.
Thomas has played in 33 games with the Bombers this season where the 17 year old defenseman has 5 points (2g, 3a). The 6’5, 201 pounder was the lone SJHL representative at the CJHL Top Prospect Game held in Surrey, BC in January.
