The Flin Flon Bombers held a 1-0 lead for most of the game, but a pair of goals 54 seconds apart by the Mustangs was all that was needed for the Bombers to drop their third straight to start the season, 2-1.
Besides the blown lead, the game had another component that the other two did, undisciplined play. The Bombers don’t lead the league in PIM, not even close, but they are taking penalties at the worse times.
“We’re not playing disciplined hockey,” said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Reagan. “The tying goal came on the power play, which changed the momentum.”
Brandon Switzer (Brandon, MB) would open the scoring late in the first period off a redirect from the point. Cory Thomas (St. Brieux, SK) and Braden Lacoursiere (Unity, SK) would pick up the assists on Switzer’s second of the season. The assist would be Thomas’s first Junior A point.
Another story in the game was the play of goaltender Zac Robidoux (Winnipeg, MB). After only facing four shots in the opening period, the 1996 born Robidoux would face 10 in the second and 11 more in the third period. Many of the second period shots came on the penalty kill when the team had to kill four penalties in the middle period including a 5 on 3.
“Zac was big for us tonight,” added Reagan. “Tonight is what we expected of him when we acquired him. He was a real reason we were in the game for so long.”
Travis Mayan would pick up his first of the season at the midway point of the third on the power play and rookie Kalem Zary would pick up his first Junior A goal just 54 seconds later for the Melfort win.
The loss was the team’s third straight to start the season, a stat that is not indicative of how the season has gone so far.
“We think that we could be 3-0,” commented Reagan. “We have blown leads in all three games, it’s something that we addressed before tonight, and it’s something that we have to continue to stress, we need to play better with a lead.”
The Bombers will look to get in the win column on Friday night when they host the Humboldt Broncos at the Whitney Forum.
