One player received a weekly honor, one was named a league award nominee and the team handed out their team awards this past week, oh yeah, and the team is still jockeying in the playoff picture which will come down to one game in the week that was.
Goalie of the Week: 1994 born Adam Beukeboom (Sundre, AB) returned to the Flin Flon Bomber net after a six week absence one week ago and didn’t appear with any rust. His strong play helped him win the Sasktel SJHL Goalie of the Week.
Bell Nomiee For Top D-Man: 1994 born Tyler Bell (Regina, SK) was named the Sherwood Division nominee for the IBAS SJHL Defenseman of the Year. Bell came to the team after being assigned by the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL in October. He was given a larger work load after the call up of 1995 born defenseman Tanner Lishchynsky to the Kootenay Ice of the WHL, after picking up 12 points (6g, 6a) in 12 games was named the IBAS SJHL Defenseman of the Month in January. He also picked up two Defenseman of the Week awards this season.
Evans Commits: 1994 born Austin Evans (Whistler, BC) committed to the Norwich University Cadets NCAA Division III men’s hockey team for the 2015-16 season. Evans has 33 points (9g, 24a) in 53 games this season with the Bombers. He had 28 points (12g, 16a) in 54 games split between the Bombers and Battlefords North Stars.
Last Weekend Of Regular Season: The Bombers have been in a dog fight with two other teams for their final playoff position, and after the weekend it didn’t clear up at all. After splitting their home and home series with La Ronge, and the Nipawin Hawks splitting theirs with Melfort, it will come down to their Tuesday night matchup to see who moves into fifth and plays the Notre Dame Hounds, or moves into sixth and play the Melville Millionaires.
Team Awards: Chris Rauckman (Red Deer, AB) picked up four awards and Captain Dean Allison picked up a pair as the Bombers handed out their team awards on Saturday night. Check out this page for the full list of winners.
02/27/15 – 2-4 @ La Ronge Ice Wolves: Two goals in the first, and one more in each the second and third had the Ice Wolves beat the Bombers in the first game of the home and home series. The Wolves came in fighting for their playoff lives. Dean Allison (Surrey, BC) and Chris Rauckman (Red Deer, AB) each had a goal and assist with Tyler Bell (Regina, SK) also picking up a helper in the loss. Adam Beukeboom (Sundre, AB) was solid, as he’s been most of the season, making 48 saves.
02/28/15 – 7-1 vs La Ronge Ice Wolves: After going into the third period up 2-1, the Bombers exploded with 5 goals in the final frame, cruising to a 7-1 victory over La Ronge. The Wolves loss officially took them out of the playoffs. Tyson Empey (Swift Current, SK) and Brett Kitt (Brandon, MB) had a pair of goals each with singles coming from Brandon Switzer (Brandon, MB), Austin Evans (Whistler, BC) and Alex Smith (Edmonton, AB). Allison, Brandon Masson (Oak Lake, MB), Joel Kocur (Edson, AB) , and Nick Shumlanski (Tisdale, SK) each had a pair of assists with Rauckman, Michael Knaub (Morden, MB), Braden Lacoursiere (Unity, SK) and Jason Cohan (North Vancouver, BC) all picking up one. Beukeboom made his fourth straight start making 34 saves for this 10 win of the year.
