Bombers and Mustangs clash in a battle for first in the Sherwood Division

It’s still early in the season but tonight’s matchup between the Flin Flon Bombers and the Melfort Mustangs is a big one for both clubs (Game time 8:30 pm, Radio: 102.9 CFAR).

The two clubs are tied for first in the Sherwood Divison with 20 points and depends on what happens in the other game, tonight’s winner might come out tops in the league as both teams are only one point behind the Kindersley Klippers, who are also in action against the Battlefords North Stars.

Flin Flon (8-2-2-2) is coming off a 6-3 win last night over the Yorkton Terriers where Melfort (9-3-0-2) is fresh off a big 6-1 victory against the Notre Dame Hounds.

For the Bombers it’s all systems go, they continue to score in bunches with Chris Rauckman (Red Deer, AB) scoring his league leading 14th goal last night.  The 1994 born forward has only went pointless in two games so far this season.

Alex Smith (Edmonton, AB) is also having a breakout year.  Smith, who after being named the SJHL’s Canalta Player of the Week two times in the first part of the season, scored two goals in the win last against Yorkton.

Captain Dean Allison (Surrey, BC) is coming off a three point performance last night and at one time registered a point in five straight games to end September and begin October.

Melfort has the only top point getter in the league with second year forward Travis Mayan who is one point behind Rauckman in the SJHL.

The only time these two clubs have met this season it was game three of the season and the host Mustangs beat the Bombers 4-3 on the strength of three second period goals and a two point performance by 1994 born Adam Fauchoux.

Fans should get used to these two teams because after tonight they will meet each other three more times in the next two weeks.
