Former Flin Flon Bombers defenseman Michael Young (Chestermere, AB) has been named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Defenseman of the Week.  Young is playing in his senior year with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks of the NCHC which is a Division I league in the NCAA.

Young made a big impact in the final regular-season home games of his career, totaling three points (1g, 2a)  while posting a +2 rating and blocking six shots to lead the Mavericks to a sweep of Colorado College. On Friday, he helped UNO pitch its first shutout of the season, while dishing out an assist on a power play goal and posting a +1 rating in a 6-0 victory.

The next night, Young had a hand in both Omaha goals with the primary helper on the game-tying power play goal in the first period, while he scored the game-winning goal, his first goal of the season, 55 seconds into overtime to give UNO a 2-1 win on Senior Night. He was also +1 on Saturday, when he blocked six shots and was named the game’s first star. On the weekend, Young helped limit CC to just one goal while anchoring a penalty kill unit that went 7-for-7.

Young accepted a scholarship to UNO after playing three seasons with the Flin Flon Bombers (2007-2010) and served as team captain in his final season.  Over his three seasons in the Maroon and White he had 125 points (36g, 89a) in 154 games.

This year in Nebraska, Young has 19 points (1g, 18a) in 32 games helping the Mavericks to a third place sitting in the NCHC with a 12-8-2-1 record.  He was named the teams Captain at the beginning of the season.
