After giving up a quick 2-0 lead to the visiting Melfort Mustangs last night, the Flin Flon Bombers quickly took it back and then scored two goal in a shootout to take a 3-2 win over the Mustangs, but more importantly, move to within one point of a playoff spot.
Melfort scored early on the power play, just shy of four minutes in and then took a 2-0 lead with seven minutes left in the opening period.
Austin Calladine would make it 2-1 just a minute after, and then Tyson Empey would tie it up, redirecting a shot from the point, to make it 2-2 going into the second.
Linemates Erik Pedersen and Parker Evans-Campbell assisted on Calladine’s 16th of the season, and first goal in almost a month, with Brody Robinson and AJ Kapcheck picking up helpers on Empey’s sixth of the season.
The 2-2 tie would stay that way until a shootout with both teams trading scoring chances in the second. It was mostly the Mustangs in the third, keeping the Bombers to only three shots in the final period of regulation.
Flin Flon would start the shootout with Austin Evans scoring a beauty, tucking it just under the bar and over the shoulder of the Mustangs’s Jack Romanuik.
Simon Hofley stopped the first two Melfort shooters before finally being beat by Adam Fauchoux glove side.
Parker Evans-Campbell then tucked one through the legs of Romanuik for the win.
The Bombers also got some help in the standings when the Battlefords North Stars beat the Weyburn Red Wings 4-1. The Red Wings find themselves on a four game losing streak.
Flin Flon is now just one point behind the Wings with a game in hand. That game will come on Friday when the league’s top team, Yorkton Terriers is in town.
ICE CHIPS: Flin Flon was 0 for 3 on the power play with Melfort going 1 for 3. --- Flin Flon’s remaining games are against Yorkton (Friday), La Ronge (Saturday) and Melfort (Tuesday). The first two are at home. Weyburn plays in Estevan on Friday and then host the Bruins at home on Saturday.
