Penner scores two, including the winner, as Jones and the Hawks take Flin Flon to OT in a playoff type game.

Davis Jones was good, real good, but Brett Penner got the best of him twice last night as the Flin Flon Bombers edged the Nipawin Hawks 2-1 in overtime in a key North Conference matchup last night.

Flin Flon fired 50 shots in total, including 19 in the middle frame, but was only able to get two past Jones, who took home third star last night.

The Hawks opened up the scoring just past the midway point of the first, off a giveaway, as Artsiom Kalashnikov slipped one past starting goalie Devin Buffalo on the breakaway.

That 1-0 lead would last most of the game before Penner scored his first of two, his ninth of the season, 11:14 into the third.

Dillan McCombie and Cam Blair would pick up the helpers.

“That was a great game, fun to be a part of,” Head Coach and General Manager Mike Reagan commented after the game, “it had a playoff atmosphere to it.”

Penner would get the OT winner 3:42 into the extra period, beating Davis on the blocker side.  Josh Roach and McCombie assisted on the winner.

Next up for the Bombers is a big weekend series against the Humboldt Broncos starting Friday night at the Whitney Forum.
